This paper extends the extant research on distinctive and core competences through exploring some of the difficulties associated with using the concepts of distinctive competence, core competence, and, business model. By focusing on developing practice underpinned by concepts suggested by the literature, the paper then concentrates on developing the nature of distinctiveness through exploring the systemic nature of the competences. The method for articulating the concepts was developed to both elucidate their relationships and shift definitions from relatively vague descriptions to operationally viable concepts. Consequently the paper is an exploration of theory based on application to practice undertaken through an extensive program of research over 15 years with 44 Top Management Teams.
