Abstract

Email abstract to a colleague

The Even Swaps approach to multicriteria decison analysis (MCDA), proposed by Hammond Keeney and Raiffa in 1998, is a theoretically well founded and conceptually attractive alternative to Multi Attribute Value Theory (MAVT) methods as it handles the difficult issue of trade-offs without the use of criteria weights. But how is viewed by decision makers? We report on a series of studies, involving over 250 experienced decision makers on an MBA programme, to explore their use of the Even Swaps method, and their perceptions of its usability and usefulness in comparison with MAVT. The results, which highlight strengths and weaknesses of both approaches, are relevant for decision makers, decision analysts, software developers and teachers.
