This paper surveys 40 mobile telecommunication companies to determine how internationalised they are. Internationalisation is examined along three dimensions: the number of countries, number of proportionate subscribers and number of proportionate subscribers by region. The role of M&A in shaping internationalisation if highlighted, as is the methodological difficulties of calculating proportionate subscriber numbers. As the extent to which operators are internationalised differs along each of these dimensions, the paper highlights that determining which operator is the most internationalised is not straightforward.
