This paper charts the development of the Nepalese telecommunications industry. Over the course of the last 30 years or so, substantial changes have occurred such as the establishment of international telecommunication links, the introduction of competition and reaching the tele-density milestone of more than 1 line per 100 people in 1999. However, large parts of the country are without access to telecommunication services and the liberalisation of the market has not been straightforward. This paper identifies three inter-related issues ? resources, geography and the CPN (Maoist) insurgency ? that will influence how the industry develops in the coming years.
